This study was designed to measure the maximum weight that can be held for 5 seconds using static contraction training methods, and compare this with performing a static hold on a lighter weight load. For obvious reasons, you would expect to be able to hold a lighter weight for a longer period of time. What was interesting from the findings is that the reduction in weight and the amount of time the weight could be held for did not go in a linear pattern. By reducing the weight held by 50%, instead of holding twice as long, the static hold times were 10.2 times longer. Based on Pete's calculations, a 50% reduction in weight reduced the intensity to just 5.2% of peak intensity. This makes you think twice about using light weights and high reps now, doesn't it?
Getting Stronger Faster Using Static Contraction Training
You may find it hard to believe and even counter intuitive that a short 2 to 3 minute static contraction workout is more effective at building more strength faster than a convention workout session that lasts 30 to 45 minutes. In fact, you probably think this isn't even real. Since publishing his Power Factor Training and Static Contraction Training books in the 1990's Pete Sisco's training methods have been used by hundreds of thousands of people. His training method has been written about in all the best fitness and bodybuilding publications such as Flex, Ironman, Men's Fitness, Muscle and Fitness, and dozens of other publications. Using his training methods, seasoned weight lifters have been able to increase static strength by 51%, one rep max by 27.6%, and increase 10 rep max strength by 34%.
