Eye Exercises for Better Eyesight

Eye Excercises

Your eyes allow you to see, and perform daily functions that we take for granted. However, when excessive strain and stress are placed on your eyes such as from sitting in front of the computer too long, fixating on a video game, or focusing on reading, your eyes can become dry, irritated, and tired. Most people will have experience eye discomfort to some degree at some point, especially with the amount of time the average person spends in front of the computer screen nowadays. So what can you do to help alleviated some of these eye problems? You can take several minutes of your day and perform eye exercises that will help relax your eyes, and reduce the strain and stress placed on your eyes.

There is a wide variety of eye exercises available that you can perform to relax your eyes, and to reduce the stress and strain placed on your eyes. Some individuals perform eye exercises to keep their eyes healthy, while others do it in hopes of improving their vision. Your eyes are like any other part of your body, performing regular eye exercises can work to help keep your eyes and eye muscles healthy and fit.

There is some controversy on whether regularly performing eye exercises can help improve your eyesight. Various studies in the past have found that eye excercises did not have any benefit for improving vision or eyesight. However, there are anecdotal evidence that suggests eye exercises have some benefits for strengthening the eyes and as well as improving vision. Regardless, performing some eye exercises can help strengthen your eyes, and help them function better.

Eye Exercises You can Perform

There are many eye excercises you can perform to help relax your eyes and strengthen your eye muscles. Some involving focusing in and out on objects at different distances, while other exercises involve rotating your eyes and using your eyeballs to track moving objects. Below are some different eye exercises you can perform:

Eye focus exercise – Hold an object, such as a pen or pencil close to your face such that you can see it clearly, and focus your eyes on that object for several seconds. Next, focus your eyesight on another object about 10 feet away. Alternate focusing your eyes on these two objects.

You can also do this using your two thumbs. Hold one thumb just a few inches away from your face, and hold your other thumb far out in front of you. Focus in on the close thumb, then switch the focus to the further thumb. This exercise can help improve your ability to focus.

Thumb rotations (tracking an object) – this exercise is performed one eye at a time. First, cover you left eye with your left hand. Hold your right thumb up directly in front of you, with your arm straight. With your right eye focused on your right thumb, move your right hand in a pattern to make any variety of shapes. For example, circles, half circles, squares, triangles, etc…

Maintain your right eye focus on your right thumb during the movement. Do this several times, and then switch to your left eye. Do not let your head move during this eye exercise. Only your open eye should be moving to follow your thumb.

Rotate your eyes – start with looking your eyes up at your eyebrows. Starting with your eyes focused on your eye brows, make the largest circle possible by rolling your eyes in a circular motion.

All you need is several minutes to perform these eye exercises. You do not need to spend a lot of time on them. When you are working hard or performing tasks that requires your eyes to fixate on a screen or reading, make sure to remember to move your eyes around, look at other objects, and give your eyes a bit of a break. Performing different eye exercises will help release some of the strain and stress placed on your eyes, and help relax your eyes.

Before performing these eye exercises, you may wish to consult your eye doctor. You should also take off your contacts before performing any of these exercises to prevent your contacts from moving around or become dislodged.
